Once the largest meat market in Southeast Asia, Central Market has been reincarnated as a retail and F&B ‘Playground for All’ under the same name. The building itself dates back to 1939 and is an example of the Bauhaus and Streamline Moderne styles of the time. A decade in the recasting, the revitalised Grade III historic building is now invigorated, with the original terrazzo grand staircase upgraded to welcome visitors. Cleverly, the stall layout, red lamps and wayfinding designs all evoke the traditional wet market, now with a modern twist. In addition to shopping amid nostalgia, visitors can enjoy a tantalising range of food and beverages at the outdoor atrium, or catch an open forum, exhibition or cultural performance at the multifunctional event space.
