On the tip of Cheung Sha Wan Pier stands an extraordinary maritime landmark. Designed by New Office Works, this is the Cheung Sha Wan Pier Canopy, offering shelter from the rain and shade from the sun. The area around Cheung Sha Wan promenade was recently revamped, with residential and commercial developments positioned to look over a waterfront still echoing to boats loading and unloading cargo. And it’s the rising and falling of docked vessels, to which the undulating profile of the canopy, its roof set at varying levels, refers. Terraced seating extends outside the canopy, which comprises steel curved beams and cylindrical columns. Where sunlight penetrates, canopy shadows ripple; at night, ambient light leaves a canopy imprint rippling on the water.
