WestK’s Competition Pavilion lived up to its name by winning the Hong Kong Young Architects and Designers Competition 2017. It also took the Silver Award in the DFA Design for Asia Awards 2019 – when it still bore its original name, Growing Up. Its designers, Paul Tse and Evelyn Ting, of New Office Works, stated that the “growing” of a city’s cultural identity demanded deep foundations in its everyday features. Just as the West Kowloon Cultural District was emerging, so the public-space pavilion symbolised selected facets of its home: timber columns beneath a sloping roof evoked seedlings nearby; stepped seating above a wide stage reflected Hong Kong’s hilly geography. As you move around the structure the columns seem to overlap, changing the perspective on the waterfront. And from the water, a distinctive profile grows from the western harbour reaches.
