DOUGUYA HATCHAREA
Kowloon City & Kwun Tong
To step across the threshold of this Kowloon Bay shop is to step into a parallel world akin to that depicted in Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s In Praise of Shadows: ‘Everything is delicate and nuanced, softened by shadows and the patina of age.’ Here, owner Pete – who spent considerable time living and working in Japan – has meticulously curated a collection that runs from repaired furniture found in traditional Japanese folk houses to ceramics, pottery and woodwork created by Japanese artists. Dim lighting, as elegantly visualised in Tanizaki’s essays, invites visitors to re-evaluate their relationship with objects and spaces, at ease and in hushed awe. Come and appreciate the grain of old wood, and the mindfulness of beauty.
