Aside from all the classic coffee options, the wide selection of teas and the decent food menu, Halfway is best known for serving its brews in vintage China cups – even the takeaway paper cups feature porcelain patterns so the aesthetic won’t be compromised. Owner/barista Tommy Chui is so committed to the cups that there’s a Halfway Museum next door dedicated to his collection. This relaxing coffee joint is appropriately tucked away near the antiques shopping area known as Cat Street, the source (along with Sham Shui Po) of all those delicate receptacles. Chui wanted his cafés to be part of the local fabric, with locations and interiors customised to establish a community identity. The result is a wealth of 1980s-inspired detail, extending to cashiers using metal buckets to collect money, as in traditional local markets.
