Since 2015 and its revitalisation by the Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, together with the Hong Kong Government, the 19th-century Old Tai Po Police Station has arguably been the SAR’s eco-friendliest building. As the Green Hub, it is a functioning advert for sustainability, with its simple guesthouse in the former police quarters, vegetarian Eat Well Canteen, heritage tour and craft workshops, seasonal co-op market supported by small local enterprises, and in-house historical displays. The old station, now a declared monument, is also a prime example of colonialperiod Architecture and a beacon for conservation, combining a Chinese-style pitched roof with Western features such as verandahs and louvre windows. Standing guard outside, meanwhile, are two Old and Valuable Trees, plus 39 other mature trees; and you can’t say much greener than that.
