Once abandoned, this Hakka-Catholic island is now a thriving destination for creativity. Visitors are greeted by an imposing wooden sculpture and a colourful birdhouse, before they make their way to the UNESCO-recognised salt pans and St Joseph’s Chapel, both remnants of a 200-strong fishing and salt-producing community. Grab some local snacks, such as Hakka dough dumplings and tofu custard, at the village store, visit the heritage exhibition and preservation centre, or join a guided tour for a detailed look into the lives of the islanders. Those visiting during the annual Sai Kung Hoi Arts Festival (Nov-Jan) can also examine artworks co-created by artists and villagers, more examples of which can be found on other Sai Kung islands.
